Correction: An earlier version of this story misstated the placement of the gas tank storage for the Weber Genesis II grill.

Serious grillers know that the barbecue season lasts all year. Summer is prime gill time, with parties practically every weekend. In the fall, the heat of the grill is not intensified by the heat of summer. By winter, grilling can become euphoric: no sun beating down and no bugs biting at your skin. By spring, the days are just starting to warm again, and you can relax your shoulders while the grill warms up.

And if you are in the market for a new grill, fall may be the best time to catch some end of season deals.

When you are digging into your next or first grill purchase, you want to consider items like:

  • Price (for this roundup, we looked at grills up to the $1,000 range, except for one category)
  • Size (portable, small, midsize, large)
  • Material (cast aluminum, sheet metal, cast iron, or stainless steel)

Grills come in many shapes and sizes and offer all kinds of special features, including storage, lighting, and portability. With so many options available, we’ve narrowed the search to help you find the best grill for your needs.

IMAGE: AMAZON The Good Checks all the boxes • Built-in rotisserie • Lots of features The Bad Hard to find the flaws The Bottom Line Don’t think twice about it: The Broil King Regal S490 Pro is the grill to go with.

1. Broil King Regal S490 Pro

Don’t think twice about it: The Broil King Regal S490 Pro checks all the boxes and is the grill to go with.

  • Dimensions: 56.3 x 24.8 x 49.2 inches
  • Total BTUs: 50,000
  • Burners: 4 dual-tube
  • Total cooking space: 695 square inches

$999 from Amazon The Broil King Regal S490 Pro checks all the boxes. The stainless steel Dual-Tube burners (50,000 BTUs) and Flav-R-Wave cooking system ensure even and consistent grilling. The side burner (10,000 BTUs) and rear burner (15,000 BTUs) provide additional cooking space for preparing full meals or cooking for a crowd. The rear burner also features a rotisserie kit that extends the full width of the main cook-box, enough room to slow-roast a chicken and a turkey at the same time.
Additional features include lit control knobs for after dark entertaining, a pull-out drawer that stores your propane tank, and extra cabinet space to store your grilling tools.
The attractive design includes side shelves for storing items such as condiments and/or holding drinks (what’s a BBQ without a beer?). The grill also comes equipped with leg levelers that can be adjusted to ensure you are cooking on a level surface.
It is very telling that Broil King offers a lifetime warranty on the cook box, 10-year warranty on the burner, and two-year warranty on parts and paint.  The company stands behind their product and so do we!
Broil King customer Fred T says:

“There won’t be enough room in this review to tell you everything that we love about our Broil King Regal S490 Pro! Beats ALL competitors’ products hands down! In short, everything we cook tastes better. Juicy and flavorful! We get the flavor of traditionally grilled food with a sear when we choose to have it. High unit quality and workmanship! Love the built-in rotisserie. Buy this Grill! You will not be disappointed!”

IMAGE: SEARS The Good Lots of storage space • Moderately priced • All the essentials The Bad Assembly can be difficult • BTUs are on the high end so burns more fuel The Bottom Line This grill gives you everything you need and the space to store it.

2. Kenmore 4-Burner Gas Grill with Storage

  • Dimensions: 60 x 21.3 x 46 inches
  • Total BTUs: 40,000
  • Burners: 4
  • Total cooking space: 425 square inches

$399.99 from Sears We are not all serious grillers. Some of us are just looking for a basic grill to cook some burgers on from time to time. The Kenmore 4-Burner Gas Grill with Storage provides all the essential grilling features and is designed with plenty of extra storage space. The grill includes a side burner, cast-iron grates, a warming rack, and a convenient side panel. The Kenmore 4-Burner Gas Grill also boasts storage racks for your grilling utensils.
The Kenmore 4-Burner Gas Grill includes four burners that heat 425 square inches of cooking space. This grill runs hot with an output of 53,000 BTUs per hour, a little more than necessary for a grill this size.
We did read some complaints from customers on the assembly process, but most said once it was ready for cooking there were no issues.
Sears customer mattjones14 says:

“The Kenmore 4 Burner Stainless Steel Lid Gas Grill with Storage is the grill we have been looking for. It has everything you can imagine. It’s a sharp looking grill.”

IMAGE: WALMART The Good Stainless steel durable construction • Lots of space for prep and storage The Bad Low lid prevents cooking larger items The Bottom Line The features on the Char-Broil Performance Series 6-Burner Gas Grill exceed the modest price tag.

3. Char-Broil Performance Series 6-Burner Gas Grill

The many features on this Char-Broil exceed the modest price tag.

  • Dimensions: 24.5 x 45 x 62.4 inches
  • Total BTUs: 60,000
  • Burners: 6
  • Total cooking space: 650 square inches

$371.4 from Walmart The modest price tag on the Char-Broil Performance Series 6-Burner Gas Grill might give you pause about the quality of the product, but this grill is far from a lemon. The Char-Broil Performance Series 6-Burner Gas Grill comes equipped with six burners that produce 66,000 BTUs of cooking heat over the 680 square inches of porcelain-coated cast iron grates. The grill makes good use of extra space with a 280-square-inch swing rack and a 10,000 BTU side burner.
The short lid will prevent you from grilling a full turkey, but you have plenty of space for most standard grill meals. A two-door cabinet provides storage space for a propane tank as well as your grill supplies, which can also find a home on the side table designed for prep work.
Char-Broil customer Jim Laz says:

“I love grilling and especially searing steaks and chops on my 6-burner grill. I’ve fallen in love with outdoor cooking all over again since I got the new Char-Broil. I cook out as often as weather permits and can’t believe the difference the sear burner makes in keeping meat juicy and delicious. I also enjoyed the rotisserie feature in broiling chicken. Wow! What difference in flavor since I used my new 6-burner over the past year. I recommend it to my friends all the time.”

IMAGE: WALMART The Good Affordable • Portable • Easy to use The Bad Smaller grilling space than non-portable grills • Lower heat output The Bottom Line The Coleman Road Trip LXE Portable Propane Grill is just what the chef ordered for the griller-on-the-go.

4. Coleman RoadTrip LXE Portable Propane Grill

  • Dimensions: 24.5 x 45 x 62.4 inches
  • Total BTUs: 20,000
  • Burners: 2
  • Total cooking space: 285 square inches

$124.95 from Walmart The Coleman Road Trip LXE Portable Propane Grill is essential for campground grilling, a football tailgate, or any of your other mobile grilling needs.
The lightweight, collapsible grill frame makes it easy to pack up your grill and go. The Coleman Road Trip LXE Portable Propane Grill is also equipped with large wheels that allow you to pull your grill through a parking lot or even rougher terrain, such as through the woods or across a sandy beach. Storage space on both sides of the grill allows you to keep your utensils and seasonings within reach. Coleman also offers griddle or stove grate options (sold separately) to broaden your grilling options.
The Coleman Road Trip LXE Portable Propane Grill grates are constructed of porcelain-coated cast iron. The grill offers 285 square inches of cooking space, enough room to grill up a meal for your fellow campers or tailgaters while still being compact enough to fit in your vehicle. It produces 20,000 BTUs of heat per hour, which is slightly less than ideal for a grill of this size.  In other words, it may take a little longer to heat up your food to its ideal temperature, but you also won’t burn through fuel as quickly.
Coleman customer Warpath says:

“I use my LXE grill for tailgating. I’ve purchased the hose and connector to use my 20 lb. propane tank which works flawlessly. It cleans easily, stores quickly and takes up little space in my Ford Flex. I expected as much from Coleman and I’m not disappointed.”

IMAGE: AMAZON The Good Makes good use of small space • Weber quality • 10-year warranty The Bad Lower heat output The Bottom Line The Weber Genesis E-210 is ideal for those looking to entertain in a smaller outdoor space.

5. Weber Genesis II E-210 2-Burner Propane Gas Grill

  • Dimensions: 45 x 47 x 29 inches
  • Total BTUs: 26,000
  • Burners: 2
  • Total cooking space: 380 square inches

$499 from Amazon The two-burner Weber Genesis II E-210 2-Burner Propane Gas Grill is ideal for grillers who are looking for all the frills of a larger grill but are limited on space. The compact grill features hooks for storing your tools, a fold-down side table workspace, an open-cart design for additional storage, and a tuck-away warming rack for an additional 114 square inches of cooking space. Weber also offers an app-controlled thermometer for remotely checking the temperatures of your food.
The open-cart design allows you to easily mount the gas tank to the outside while maintaining ample space for storage on the shelves.
The Weber Genesis II E-210 2-Burner Propane Gas Grill is outfitted with porcelain-coated cast-iron grates and a porcelain-coated lid, and boasts an effective grease management system. It provides 380 square inches of grilling space (not including the warming rack), which is ideal for grilling for 3 to 4 people. The grill produces 26,000 BTUs of heat per hour, which, like the Coleman Road Trip LXE Portable Propane Grill, is somewhat less than the BTUs recommended for a grill of this size. As a result, cook times may lengthen but less fuel will be used.
Weber customer Hardware Dave says:

“I have used this grill most of the summer, into the fall and now in the winter. Even heat in both direct and indirect modes. I have worn out earlier generation Weber Grills and this one is the best one yet. The enhancements in burner technology and grease recovery are evident. I assembled the grill myself to get to know how it goes together and I was very impressed with the integrity of engineering and the fit of all of the parts. Fits my smaller deck just fine.”

IMAGE: AMAZON The Good Consistent cooking temperatures • Large cooking area The Bad No storage area for propane tanks • No flame-grilled flavor The Bottom Line If you are looking to feed an army of family and friends, the Camp Chef Flat Top Grill will get the job done.

6. Camp Chef Flat Top Grill 600 (FTG600)

  • Dimensions: 62.5 x 37 x 22 inches
  • Total BTUs: 48,000
  • Burners: 4
  • Total cooking space: 604 square inches (griddle) and 501 square inches (grilling)

$299.99 from Amazon Griddle grate accessories can be purchased separately for use with most standard grills; however, having the flat top on its own is a nice feature, especially if you like to entertain. The Camp Chef Flat Top Grill 600 is our favorite in this niche category of grills.
The four stainless steel burners work to heat food evenly across the cold-rolled steel griddle, so you won’t encounter hotspots that standard grills create. The non-stick surface makes for an easy cleanup.
The storage space on the side and underneath the grill will keep you fully stocked, so you won’t have to run into the house for supplies.
Amazon customer Love It had some great things to say:

“I’ve bought almost 150 items off Amazon in the last 2 years and there is no purchase I am happier with. This had changed that way my friends and I cook on a daily basis. I plan on buying one of these grills every time I need a house warming gift for one of my friends.”

IMAGE: AMAZON The Good Diverse cooking options • Stainless steel cooking rods • Infrared burner The Bad The price tag The Bottom Line You can have it all with this Weber, but you will pay for it.

7. Weber Summit S-670 Gas Grill

  • Dimensions: 30 x 74 x 57 inches
  • Total BTUs: 60,800
  • Burners: 6
  • Total cooking space: 769 square inches

$2,499 from Amazon Sure you can grill well for under $1,000, but for those working with a bigger budget, we recommend the Weber Summit S-670 Gas Grill. This high-end grill takes all the best features of the under $1,000 grills and packs them into one grill. Note: Some grill prices reach up into the 10’s of thousands of dollars, but we kept our search in the $3,000 range.

The Weber Summit S-670 Gas Grill boasts solid stainless steel cooking grates and six burners for standard grilling. The rotisserie system utilizes an infrared burner, can be tucked away when not in use, and includes additional storage for the rotisserie spit and fork. The grill also features a stainless steel smoker box and burner.
While the BTUs vary between the different burner options, the heat output is ideal for the size of the 624 square inch primary cooking area (total cooking area with warming rack is 769 square inches).
Lighted control knobs, handle and fuel gauge make the Weber Summit S-670 even more impressive during nighttime grilling. The grill also features two stainless steel side tables, one of which is equipped with a side burner for cooking sauces or sides.
Weber customer Ome4936 says:

“Love the versatility of this grill, from rotisserie to smoking and even searing. The variety of meals you can make at the same time is incredible. The construction of the grill is great and lets you know you have a grill for a very long time even with the warranty and amazing customer service.”
